The MonSFFilms Video Projects

MonSFFilms is the film division of MonSFFA, the Montreal Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, a Montreal-based SF/F fan club that has been in operation since 1987.

Over the past several years, the club has produced a series of prize-winning short amateur video-films, as can be seen on this page. Made with much enthusiasm by a cast and crew of amateurs on dollar-store budgets (quite literally!) using home-market equipment, these parodies of sci-fi, pop culture, and things Canadian exude an infectious sense of fun.

Please note that you will need a high speed (broadband) connection to view these videos (which are all in Quicktime format). To download Quicktime for your computer click on these links:

Beavra (2003)

This "extended trailer" for a cheesy, black and white B-movie about a giant beaver rampaging across The Great White North channels Godzilla and other 1950s monster movies while poking fun at contemporary Canada. It was praised as "polished and hilarious" by Godzilla historian William Tsutsui, writing on fan-films in his book Godzilla on my Mind: 50 years of the King of Monsters.

Encounters of the Very Close Kind (2001)

A trio of sci-fi fans enter the woods to shoot a fake UFO sighting for a video contest, only to encounter a real flying saucer. The film spoofs The Blair Witch Project. This is the extended version, to which has been added additional "video noise," digitally superimposed over the original footage, enhancing the idea that the tape had been found in the woods after lengthy exposure to the elements.

Mooseman (2004)

Riffing on the superhero film genre (Batman in particular), this "trailer" was shot in a single day and tells of the decidedly Canadian "Antlered Avenger," who fights crime in St-Lawrence City (Montreal), facing a collection of colourful super-villains. Rear-screen projection was used extensively, here, as a time-saver, avoiding a schedule of time-consuming location shooting.

The Simpleton's Life (2005)

Structured as a promo for a reality TV show that features time-travel, this piece pokes fun at the contemporary Paris Hilton/Nicole Richie series, imagining what might become of two 21st century party girls sent back in time to the Middle Ages. The production experiments with green-screen.
